Beetles Defined

Beetles form the largest insect group. They usually have tough, leathery covers over their wings. As larvae or adults, beetles can be real pests in the yard, eating up valuable landscaping and turf. Some, such as ladybugs, are beneficial, since they are predators and eat other pest insects.

Overview

What's that chewing sound? Probably beetles.

Beetles make up 40% of the insect world. So it's no wonder you see them in your yard or home. Some beetles eat your garden plants. Others eat your trees. Some will feast on your lawn. The larvae are often just as destructive as the adults. Once you know what the beetles are eating, you're on your way to controlling them.

Prevention and Maintenance

Wood-Boring Beetles
Wood-boring beetles, such as powerpost beetles, round-headed borers, and flat-headed borers, complete their life-cycle in wood - including tree trunks, decks, and wooden furniture. Infested wood will have small holes in the surface and frass (sawdust) may also be noticeable outside the hole as the larvae tunnel.

Beetles on Ornamentals

Japanese beetles, rose chafer beetles, Asiatic garden beetles and many others can devour your flowers, trees, shrubs, and roses.

Beetles on Vegetables & Fruit Trees

Many different types of beetles will attack your vegetable plants. They will feed on leaves, flowers, and fruit.
